Why React SPAs Are Invisible to Google
A React Single Page Application (SPA) works like this: your server sends a near-empty HTML file to the browser. That HTML contains a <div id="root"> and a bunch of JavaScript. The browser downloads and runs that JavaScript, which then builds the actual page content dynamically.
For a human visitor, this is seamless — the browser handles it all in milliseconds. But for Googlebot, there's a fundamental problem: the initial HTML contains nothing useful.
When Googlebot crawls https://yoursite.com, here's what it actually receives:

No H1. No meta description. No product content. No pricing information. No blog posts. Just an empty container waiting for JavaScript to fill it.
<div id="root"></div> in raw HTML. Google had crawled them 847 times and indexed exactly 3 pages — their privacy policy, terms of service, and a static 404 page. Their entire product catalog was invisible to search engines.
How Google Actually Handles JavaScript
Google isn't completely blind to JavaScript. In 2019, Google announced a two-wave indexing process:
- Wave 1: Googlebot fetches the raw HTML. If the content is there, it indexes it immediately.
- Wave 2: Pages queued for JavaScript rendering get processed later — sometimes days, sometimes weeks after the initial crawl.
This sounds like a solution, but it isn't — for several reasons:
- The delay is real. New pages can take weeks to get JavaScript-rendered. For a funded startup wanting to capture search traffic from their product launch, this delay kills momentum.
- It's resource-limited. Google allocates limited compute to JS rendering. Low-authority domains (new startups) get lower priority. Your pages may sit in the rendering queue indefinitely.
- It's inconsistent. Pages on the same domain may get different treatment. Core product pages might get rendered while blog posts don't.
- Dynamic content is problematic. If your content changes frequently (pricing, product features), the rendered version Google has cached may be weeks out of date.
Google's own John Mueller has been clear: "It's better to not rely on JavaScript rendering for your SEO-critical content." Don't count on Wave 2 to save you.

Empty Title and Meta Description
React SPAs often set <title>React App</title> as the default, with no meta description at all. Even if you've set them correctly in JavaScript, they only appear after JS executes — Google's first crawl sees the default. Every page competes with the same generic title in search results.
Missing or Wrong Canonical Tags
Without server-side canonical tags, Google may index multiple URL variations of the same page (?utm_source=, hash fragments, trailing slashes). Or canonical tags get set by JavaScript — meaning Google indexes the page before the canonical is present, creating duplicate content signals.
No Structured Data (Schema Markup)
JSON-LD schema added via React is invisible to Google on the first crawl. Rich results (FAQ cards, product ratings, sitelinks) require schema to be in the raw HTML. SaaS companies miss out on featured snippets and rich results that their competitors using SSR frameworks capture easily.
JavaScript-Rendered H1 Tags
H1 tags loaded via JavaScript don't exist in the initial HTML. Google uses H1 as a primary signal for understanding page topic. When we curl-audit a React SPA, we often find zero H1 tags — Google essentially has to guess what the page is about from the URL alone.
Client-Side Routing Not Indexed
React Router creates "virtual" URLs that only exist in the browser. If your server returns the same HTML for /pricing, /features, and /blog/post-1, Google sees them as identical pages. Each URL needs to return unique, relevant HTML server-side for proper indexing.

Option 1: Migrate to Next.js (Recommended)
Next.js is the gold standard. It gives you SSR (server-side rendering), SSG (static site generation), and ISR (incremental static regeneration) out of the box. Every page returns fully-rendered HTML to Googlebot on the first request.
The migration cost is real — expect 2-4 weeks for a medium-sized React app — but the SEO dividend compounds over time. Most SaaS companies we work with see meaningful organic traffic improvements within 3-4 months of migrating.
Option 2: Dynamic Rendering
If migrating to Next.js isn't feasible right now, dynamic rendering is a practical middle ground. The idea: detect when Googlebot is making the request and serve pre-rendered HTML instead of the JavaScript bundle.
Tools like Rendertron (open-source, from Google) and Prerender.io (managed service) sit in front of your app and intercept crawler requests. They render your pages with a headless browser, cache the HTML, and serve that to Googlebot.

The downside: you're adding infrastructure complexity, and Prerender.io has a cost at scale. But for a SaaS app mid-migration or one that can't be rewritten, it's often the fastest path to fixing the indexing problem.
Option 3: Gatsby (SSG)
If your site is content-heavy with relatively stable pages (marketing site, blog, docs), Gatsby is worth considering. It generates pure static HTML at build time — zero JavaScript required for Googlebot. Load times are excellent and indexing is immediate.
The trade-off: highly dynamic content (personalized dashboards, real-time data) doesn't work well with full SSG. Gatsby's hybrid approach (static shell + client-side data loading) can help, but requires careful implementation.
Option 4: React Helmet (Minimum Baseline)
If you can't do any of the above right now, React Helmet is the minimum you should implement. It at least ensures that once Google does run its JavaScript renderer, it finds proper meta tags.

How to Check If Your Site Has This Problem Right Now
Three quick checks to know if you have a React SPA indexing problem:
Test 1: The Curl Test (30 seconds)
